Four athletes from Wexford clubs were on the Ireland team competing against top school athletes from England, Scotland and Wales in the annual SIABs track and field competition held at Swansea University in Wales.
Aisling Kelly from Taghmon Athletic Club competed in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, and it was in the latter, when the Ireland team finished second that Aisling collected a silver medal. This completes Aisling’s season which has been hugely successful winning multiple Leinster and National titles.
Gergely Pap from St Paul’s Athletic Club competed in the shot putt and discus for Ireland, which was a repeat of last year. A multiple national champion, Gergely enoyed a fantastic result, finishing in third place with a best throw of 14.56m in the shot putt and finished sixth in the discus with a best throw of 39.81m.
James Hanlon from Taghmon Athletic Club, who also enjoyed a really successful season, competed in the 3000m walk and clocked up a time of 13.26 minutes, which reflects a very strong walking performance.
Darra Casey from Bree Athletic Club has had a remarkable year with many national titles – indoors and outdoors – and he is the undisputed under 17 ‘king of the hurdles’ in Ireland. Unfortuantely, his trip to Wales was disappointing as he picked up a hamstring injury during his warm up, but he showed exceptional bravery by deciding to continue!
