The Pettitt’s 5&6yo Championship has been a standing dish at the Bannow & Rathangan Show for decades, and with a prize-fund of €3,500, the competition attracts some of the best young horses in the country.

This year’s class was won by Mayo’s, Daren Hopkins, with Wexford’s, Ballywalter Farms, owning the winner, Latte Macchiato, in a fast 32.19 and stable companion, Orlando LV, took the runner-up spot, less than half a second in arrears.

It was certainly a good class for the locals, as Jason Higgins took the fifth and sixth placings as well.

Oylegate native, racehorse trainer, Jim Bolger, sponsored the €5,000 National Grand Prix, and victory went to Galway’s, Sven Hadley, with Sumas Taloubet, in 38.01.

Best of the locals, Jason Higgins partnered the Martin Egan owned, Api Des Champs, to third place, in 43.75, and Michelle Kenny and Hillside Grey Down took seventh place in the class.

The leading rider of the show was Daren Hopkins, the Mayo man, is based with Ballywalter Farms, in Kilmuckridge.
