The Longest Day – June 21st and the 221st anniversary of the battle of Vinegar Hill and the setting sun sent its long shadow across Enniscorthy’s famous landmark as its sons and daughters gathered this evening in remembrance of the 1798 Insurrection.
“Thank you all for your presence on this famous hill in remembrance of all those who fought, suffered and died in respect of their beliefs and the freedom of this nation,”said Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, who was performing her first official function as Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council.
She added; “In 1798 the desperation of the Irish people exploded into flames that led to this fierce battle here on Vinegar Hill where thousands of men, women and children died.”
Cathaoirleach Codd-Nolan concluded; “We stand here this evening in silent homage and remember all those people who lost their lives on this very soil for the freedom we cherish today.”
A lone piper led the pikemen up the narrow lane to the memorial site at Vinegar Hill where the ceremonial proceedings began and Rory O’Connor performed the duties of master of ceremonies.
