The local elections boxes are being opened at County Hall where the Gorey district has been completed with good news from the tally figures that show Malcolm Byrne leading the field with ‘two quotas’. This would indicate three seats for Fianna Fáil candidates in North Wexford.
Boxes from the Enniscorthy district will be opened next.
Three sets of ballot papers (Referendum, European Election and Local Election) are being opened at the Count Centre at Wexford County Council in County Hall, Wexford, which started at 9 am and are being checked by the European Local Returning Officer.
The European Local Returning Officer will arrange to dispatch the Local Elections ballot papers under escort to the St. Joseph’s Community Centre, Bishopswater, Wexford where they will be taken into the care and responsibility of Returning Officer, Eddie Taaffe.
Six simultaneous counts will commence shortly thereafter in St. Josephs Count Centre – one per Electoral Area – Wexford, Rosslare, Enniscorthy, New Ross, Gorey and Kilmuckridge.
The European Local Returning Officer will arrange to dispatch the European ballot papers under escort to the European Elections Count Centre in Cork.
The Referendum ballot papers will be sorted and counted in County Hall under the continued care and responsibility of the European Local Returning Officer.
While it is not possible to say with certainty what time the Local Election ballot papers will arrive at St Joseph’s Count Centre for commencement of the sorting and counting process, a reasonable estimate of that time would be between 4 -5 pm on Saturday evening.
If possible, first counts will be completed in each of the six local electoral areas on Saturday night in St Joseph’s Count Centre. It is proposed to conclude counting at midnight and to resume at 9 am on Sunday.
If there is a reasonable prospect of a subsequent count finishing in the early hours of the Sunday morning this option may also be taken.
