Wexford TD James Browne has told WexfordToday.com that he welcomes the news that the European Commission has approved Rosslare Europort as a border control post for the importation of certain products of animal origin.
“During a Dáil debate last week, the Agriculture Minister confirmed to me that Rosslare Port facilities have been approved as a border inspection post for animal origin product imports. Crucially, these facilities will give Rosslare Europort a significant advantage as it becomes only the second sea port designated as a border control post”, Deputy Browne explained.
“In a post-Brexit scenario, agri-food trade relies on the smooth passage of goods through our ports and airports. If the UK leaves the customs’ union, agri-food and fish products coming into this country will have to undergo inspection. Until now, Dublin Port served as the only port with such facilities”, Deputy Browne commented.
“On Friday week, the UK is due to leave the European Union. The Minister has assured me that post-Brexit checks will be in place at Rosslare Europort. While I understand that approval for facilities to cater for importing live animals has yet to be approved, hopefully this will be resolved in due course”, Deputy Browne concluded.
