Enniscorthy 9

Skerries        0

A sunny Saturday spring afternoon saw Enniscorthy’s ladies first XI record a resounding 9-0 win over Skerries.

Having won the league Enniscorthy could afford to take their foot off the pedal, but it was clear from the first whistle that this was not the case. Enniscorthy’s forwards Nancy Dunphy, Sonja Rynhart and May Wickham put intense pressure on the Skerries defence making sure the ball stayed in the Skerries half of the pitch.

Throughout the match Jessie Flood and Hannah Graham sent good early balls down into the corners for both wingers to run on to, May Wickham perfectly timing her runs into the corner to receive these balls.

Enniscorthy consistently attacked the baseline resulting in either a penalty corner or a strike on goal. The home side were unlucky, the first few shots on goal were saved and it was not long before Enniscorthy had their first penalty corner. May Wickham attacked the baseline, and found a foot in the circle. A powerful strike from Sonja Rynhart was deflected by May Wickham for the opening goal.

Jessie Flood made it 2-0 after Enniscorthy were awarded another penalty corner. A good move to Flood, to Laura Smith on the right, and then back to Flood, 2-0.

Some scrappy play in the circle resulted in Caoimhe Larkin finding the back of the net to make it 3-0. Another penalty corner followed and Ciara Kelly made it 4-0.

Larkin found the back of the net again, Nancy Dunphy brought the ball along the baseline and passed it across the goal to the waiting Larkin, 5-0.

Dunphy made it 6-0 before the break; precise passing between midfielders Leah Chapman and Susannah Doyle, Larkin passed to Dunphy, and she made no mistake, 6-0.

The second half resumed from where the first half ended, Enniscorthy dominated the game, the defence were solid, Jessie Flood, Julie Watchorn, Hannah Graham and Laura Smith worked well, they passed and recycled throughout the match. The composed defence managed to keep the Skerries team out of their circle and ensured another clean sheet for goalkeeper Alice Medcalf.

Once again the midfield and forwards worked together passing the ball around and attacking the Skerries goal. Their hard work was rewarded with a short corner and a Laura Smith strike was deflected by a Skerries defender’s stick into the goal, 7-0.

The Slaneysiders continued to attack and after many opportunities Jessie Flood made it 8-0, the goal came from a perfectly executed move that had paid dividends earlier.

Nancy Dunphy added the last goal to Enniscorthy’s impressive tally putting the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 9-0 on the day.

A great teamwork performance resulted in an impressive win for Enniscorthy.
