Disappointment for M1 against Weston

Weston        2

Enniscorthy 1

It wasn’t to be for Enniscorthy’s 1st XI men who were unable to get the rub of the green as they went down 2-1 to Dublin side Weston on Saturday. Enniscorthy – despite the efforts of centre forward Dunne – were unable to get a point out of the game which they probably deserved.

Both sides started well with the Dublin side marginally the better, but the defence of Simmons, Maguire, Ivan Rothwell and Andrew Rothwell were up to the challenge. The Durnan brothers on either wing of the forward line used their pace to make a nuisance of themselves for the experienced Weston defensive line. The hosts used their aerial skills from their defenders to pin Enniscorthy back but the pace of left back Maguire was able to cover for his side. Shortly before half time the visitors lost centre back Simmons when he got a ferocious ball to the foot. Enniscorthy did well in settling after losing Simmons and made it to half time allowing themselves to reorganise.

The opening goal came in the second half for the Dubliners who pounced on a rebound after ‘keeper Hill saved. Dunne came close to equalising but his powerful shot struck the post. O’Leary, Rynhart and Chapman in midfield worked very well in both defence and attack with O’Leary making some great steals off the Dubliners. Both sides were awarded a number of penalty corners throughout the game, but both sides stood up to the challenge, that was until Weston doubled their lead. The Dubliners pounced after the first shot attempt was stopped by Andrew Rothwell but Enniscorthy were unable to save the rebound. The Wexford men upped the pressure as they had nothing to lose at this stage. After an attack by the Slaneysiders up the left wing Rynhart put the ball across to Andrew Rothwell who put a reverse shot on goal, which the keeper saved, but Dunne was there to clean up and chip the ball over the out-stretched Weston goalkeeper. Unfortunately, despite the visitors best efforts they were unable to get the equaliser and the game finished 2-1 in favour of the Dublin side.

Doyles men will continue to improve week on week and will hope to get a small bit of luck this Saturday as the welcome Dublin side Three Rock Rovers to Enniscorthy.
