The 56th annual Wexford Drama Festival opens in Wexford’s Dun Mhuire Theatre tonight (Friday) and continues for eight nights with large audiences expected for every performance.
Sebastian Barry’s ‘The Steward of Christendom’ gets the show off to a perfect start with a fine presentation by Kilrush Drama Group produced by All-Ireland award-winning director, Mick Byrne, with Michael Dunbar as the main character.
It continues with ‘Unforgiven’ from the visting Cork players from Kilworth on Saturday and Tinahely makes the short hop over the Wicklow-Wexford border to present ‘Eclipsed’ on Sunday night.
Kilmuckridge Drama Group who have already won their own festival with ‘The Righteous Are Bold’ brings this presentation to Dun Mhuire Theatre on Monady night, Tuesday night’s play is ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ from the Bridge Players who only have to cross the Slaney estuary at Wexford Bridge to get from home to the stage, and Wexford Drama Group – the home team – will present ‘Rabbit Hole’ on Wednesday night.
Gorey Little Theatre brings ‘Bloomsday’ to the stage on Thursday night and it all ends with the Cavan group DADS production of ‘Factory Girls’ by Frank McGuinness on Friday night and then it is ‘adjudicator make your mind up time’ and for the top groups the celebrations will commence at the Festival Club in Simon’s Place!
A patrons ticket costs €60, €12 nightly, concession €10, and they are available from Wexford Arts Centre – wexfordartscentre.ie – or on the door nightly.
