New Ross student Caoimhín wins top technology award

Stephen O’Brien, Chairperson, TechnoTeachers Association, Darren Keneally (teacher), Caomhín Emmet O’Connell (award-winning student) and Minister John Halligan at the awards ceremony.

Caoimhín Emmet O’Connell, a student of Good Counsel College New Ross, has received a first-place award for technology in Galway.
The TechnoTeachers Association annual awards for 2018 consisted of several categories, with nominees in each category from around the State. Caoimhín placed first in Junior Certificate (OL) Technology.
For Second and Third year, Caoimhín chose Technology along with Technical Graphics and Art. The chance to build something and learn how to use equipment properly appealed to him.
Upon being told he’d won an award for getting the highest ordinary level score in Technology in all of Ireland, Caoimhin asked, “Are you sure they got the right guy?”
“It was all Caoimhin and his teacher, Mr. Kenneally. I haven’t even seen his project, but I did help him study!” said his mother,” Lynnie.
His father, Robert said; “I had to read the letter a few times before I realised what Caoimhin had achieved, but even after it had sunk in; I was shocked, but also very proud of him.”
The awards ceremony were hosted by the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and co-sponsored by Xtratherm.
Caoimhín, who is from Foulkesmill, was accompanied by very proud parents Robert Emmet and Lynnie O’Connell, and his teacher Darren Kenneally, who also received an award.
The awards were presented by Minister John Halligan TD.
