Wexford TD James Browne has welcomed Revenue’s decision to postpone the imposition of VAT on health food supplements.
A dramatic increase from 0% to 23% on supplements such as vitamins, probiotics and fish oils were due to come into effect on Friday.
However, a public consultation will now take place before a final decision is made as part of the budget for 2020.
“I’m delighted to see that common sense has finally come through. The severe negative impact of this VAT increase would have made life very difficult for independently owned pharmacies and health food stores across County Wexford.”
Deputy Browne encouraged County Wexford health food supplement consumers to voice their views during the forthcoming public consultation.
“Today’s postponement is welcome. Public consultation will give County Wexford people the opportunity to challenge the Government’s view and confirm that people take health food supplements based on medical advice in order to lead healthier, more balanced lives”, Deputy Browne concluded.
