Enniscorthy L2 lose out in top of the table clash

Pembroke Wanderers 1

Enniscorthy                   0

Saturday saw Enniscorthy Ladies’ 2nd XI, positioned top of Division 12, travel to Serpentine Avenue to take on Pembroke Wanderers. Unfortunately for the visitors, they beaten 1-0 by a very strong Pembroke side in what was an exciting contest.

Pembroke got off to a good start with early chances worked in through a tight Enniscorthy defence. D’Alton and Bolger worked seamlessly together to ensure the home side remained scoreless. A great save by Medcalf after a penalty corner opportunity meant Enniscorthy were very much in the game.  A determined Aine O’Brien fed some great balls up the left side of the pitch through Neville, Larkin and Parnell. Enniscorthy’s efforts however, went unrewarded as both teams remained scoreless at the interval.

The second half saw more intense competition between both teams, both with an eager eye on the league title. Brilliant play through the pairing of Redmond and Creed, along with skilful play by Murphy saw the play in Pembrokes half throughout the second section of the game. Unfortunately, a strong play down the right hand side of the field saw Pembroke work through Enniscorthy’s defence, putting the finishing touch on the play, sending the ball into the goal. Pembroke were 1-0 up with not long left to go.

Despite O’Brien, Kelly’s and Doyle’s efforts at penalty corner attempts, Pembroke’s defence proved too strong for Enniscorthy on the day. Although slipping from top of the league, it is still all to play for next week as Enniscorthy face Portrane at home in the Astro Active Centre on Saturday.

Squad: Alice Medcalf, Ellen Creed, Eleanor Bolger (C), Aine O’Brien, Amy D’Alton, Hannah Neville, Laura Redmond, Caoimhe Larkin, Eimear Doyle, Amy Murphy, Alice Kelly.
