Genesis 1

Saturday last saw Gorey play host to Genesis in the latest round of their Cup Competition. Gorey won the toss and decided to take tip. From the off Gorey held possession even though the home team’s nerves were first to show.

Gorey’s Zoe Kenny, Robyn Swords and Ailbhe Booth worked the ball up the pitch. A well weighted pass into the circle from Nicola Ryan to winger Muireann Deegan who took a shot on goal opening the deadlock (1-0).

Genesis restarted making an impact up the right wing. Gorey’s defense Fiona Mythen, Vicky Hughes, Bridget Kenny, Ruth Evans and Corinna Bailey ensured not to concede a penalty corner in the opening quarter.

From Bridget Kenny’s hit out, Bridget and Corinna Bailey traded passes to work the ball out from the back, up the right wing. Gorey advanced towards Genesis’ goal winning a short corner. Robyn Swords pushed the ball out to the top of the circle where Ailbhe Booth slipped the ball right for Nicola Ryan to drive home Gorey’s 2nd goal (2-0).

Genesis restarted and launched an attack winning a series of short corners. Gorey’s backline ensured Genesis would not score before the half-time whistle blew.

Genesis started the second half but Gorey’s Odile Evans won posession midway and ran towards goal. A flicked pass outside to Muireann Deegan ensured Gorey entered the visitor’s circle again. A quick thinking pass across the circle by Muireann allowed Grainne Waters sweep the ball into the net making it 3-Nil. 

Genesis held firm and restarted once more. Center, Ailbhe Booth won the ball and headed for goal, offloading the ball to Sarah Merrigan. Sarah returned the pass and Ailbhe Booth took a straight shot only for it to be stopped on the line by a foot. The umpire deemed the stop illegal and Gorey were awarded a penalty flick. Ailbhe Booth stepped up and scored Gorey’s fourth goal (4-0).

Genesis didnt drop their heads and attacked up the wing. Robyn Swords and Vicky Hughes kept them at bay however a free was awarded just inside their 23 metre line. From the free Genesis entered the D winning 3 consecutive corners. 

Genesis set up trying a switch to the penalty spot. Gorey’s keeper Fiona Mythen, aware of the danger stepped out, diving and skilfully  palmed the ball wide with her glove. From the subsequent long corner Genesis sent the ball across goal and deflected the ball in at the back post (4-1).

Ailbhe Booth restarted. Robyn Swords marched up the left wing. Gorey’s substitutes Rachael McSweeney, Olive McGarry and Sabhdh Corcoran worked hard to  retain posession. Gorey won another penalty corner. Gorey pushed the ball to the top of the D and sent it right back in, Muireann Deegan doubled her tally from a rebound in front of the keeper (5-1).

Gorey now progress to the next round of the Cup and return to the League match next week.
