Enniscorthy 2
Rathgar 0
Enniscorthy came out victorious with a 2-0 win over Rathgar on a chilly January evening.
Enniscorthy appeared to have the majority of the play for the first half resulting in several circle entries. Some great balls sent by Chapman down to Wickham on the right. Resulting from all the circle entries a well deserved penalty corner was won by the Slaneysliders.
Rathgar appeared a threat with quick breaks up the left from the opposition’s hit out. However a permanently composed defence dealt with these excellently resulting in few circle entries and a clean sheet for McGinty.
As Rathgar stood over the next placed ball Enniscorthy had a strong press in place resulting in the opening goal. Great pressure applied by Larkin resulting in a turnover ball on the 23 metre line. A pass into Wickham on the circle with a top quality finish into the bottom corner gave Enniscorthy the lead heading into half time.
Some great outletted balls through the centre backs Smith and captain Watchorn allowed player of the match Flood to make excellent runs up the left keeping the pressure on the Rathgar defence.
The second half began with some excellent attacking runs through the centre by Ogilvie. Excellent links between Kelly and Walsh, which allowed Walsh to show off her 3D skills along the baseline. Rynhart continuously proving a threat to the Rathgar defence with some excellent skill to enter the circle. An attacking defence allowed balls to be transferred out to the right and left backs Chapman and Flood which proved to stretch the oppositions defence. Larkin was unlucky not to convert with a shot shooting into the air narrowly missing the goal line, along with Kelly’s shot scarcely missing the target and Ogilvie’s reverse shot saved by the Rathgar keeper.
An excellent run forward from Aoife Mahon after intercepting a pass enabled her to win another penalty corner just on the stroke of full time. A Flood strike was saved and the ball was hovering around the circle eventually finding Larkin who flicked it by the goalie to seal the deal for the Slaneysiders.
Squad: Norah McGinty, Julie Watchorn, Laura Smith, Jessie Flood, Leah Chapman, Niamh Ogilvie, Aoife Mahon, Ciara Kelly, May Wickham, Isabelle Walsh, Sonja Rynhart, Caoimhe Larkin.
North Kildare 1
Enniscorthy 3
On Sunday the 20th of January Enniscorthy L1s travelled to North Kildare to play a re-fixed match which had been cancelled before Christmas due to weather. In the first half Enniscorthy’s back line of Watchorn, Nic Corcráin, Rogan and Farrell denied the opposition many circle entries.
From the start of the second half Enniscorthy were on top with brilliant passing through out the midfield, Chapman, Mahon and Flood. Fifteen minutes into the second half linked passes up the right wing between Flood, Chapman and Wickham resulted in a penalty corner which was perfectly executed by Watchorn getting the first goal of the game. Goal keeper Rothwell made critical saves when called upon. Melanie Dunne and Ciara Parnell also came close to scoring with unfortunate wides. Twenty minutes into the second half a great ball by Flood resulted in the second goal which was finished brilliantly by Rynhart. Finally, to secure the win Rogan entered the circle laying off a lovely pass to Wickham on the right who finished it with a shot from the top right side of the circle. The end result was 3-1 to Enniscorthy.
