Wexford CBS win South Leinster Final

Top Oil South Leinster Senior Hurling ‘C’ Final

Ferns COE, Tuesday January 15, 2019
Wexford CBS………………………………..1-20
Grennan College (Thomastown)…..2-16

Thomastown rattled the net in the 60th minute to level the score at 1-19 to 2-16 and it appeared that extra time was on the way. However, Michael Laffan gathered possession from the puck out, burst past his man and split the posts to steal the title for the Bokerboys.
It looked anything but healthy for CBS when they trailed by 0-13 to 0-7 coming up to half-time but Jason Gordon’s free went all the way to the net in the 28th minute resulting in a three point deficit at the break – which was ‘doable’ considering CBS would have the wind at their backs in the new half.
A strangely subdued CBS struggled to hit form in the opening half as Thomastown held the upper hand. Points from Michael Laffan (f), Glen Murphy-Butler, Richie Lawlor (2) and Jason Gordon had the score at 0-8 to 0-5 in favour of the Kilkenny students after 15 minutes.
Turning around just 0-3 behind, CBS bossed the second half and took the lead after 40 minutes as Laffan, Jason Gordon (2), Eoin Kavanagh and Josh Shiel (f) left the Bokerboys ahead by 1-12 to 0-14.
The final quarter could be renamed the Michael Laffan show as he guided his team over the line scoring six of CBS’s next seven points. CBS had slowly and strenuously built up a nice 1-19 to 0-16 lead heading into the final minutes and also saw a penalty saved. However, two late goals (one from a quick free) left CBS reeling but Laffan kept his head and skilfully put the ball over the bar to claim the title.
CBS had heroes all over the pitch. Chris Ryan was solid in goal while Joe Barrett, Ben Hynes and Conor Graydon along with the outstanding Kyle Scallan performed well in defence. Richie Lawlor, Jason Gordon, Eoin Kavanagh and Josh Shiel worked very hard up front while Michael Laffan lit up Ferns in the second half with his outstanding performance.

Team captain Richard Lawlor received the trophy from Pat Henderson of Leinster Council and his side now enter into the Leinster championship.
