Gorey 2 V Genesis 0
Gorey beat arch rivals Genesis in an epic showdown in Enniscorthy on Saturday. The score was a hard fought Two Nil, especially as we were still running off the Christmas Dinner.
It was a bitterly cold day with Gorey dominating possession in the first half. Genesis struggled to penetrate the Gorey circle. The first goal was a wonderfully struck shot from Muireann Deegan. Gorey settled in to the game nicely once the first goal was scored. The teams battled hard for the rest of the first half but the score remained the same.
Some half time substitutions gave the team fresh legs, but an injury to Ruth meant we had to re-shuffle the Gorey defense. This allowed Genesis to apply more pressure. Vicky and Bridget initiated a counter attack from deep in the left corner. Some great passing between Odile and Grainne spread the Genesis defence, allowing Grainne to score a decisive second goal. Gorey successfully defended a wave of short corners and continued to generate attacking opportunities which helped maintain possession through to the end of the game.
Gorey meet Genesis again in a fortnight’s time in the Cup Competition which we expect to be another epic event.
