Track Manager Michael Murphy told tonight’s annual general meeting of Wexford Racecourse Supporters’ Club held in the Ivy Room at the track that it was a successful season with the attendance figure holding its own and he thanked the Supporters’ Club founded in 1987 for their continued support of racing at Bettyville Park.
Mr Murphy outlined the weather conditions that prevailed in a varied way. “It was only 2 degrees on a bitter St. Patrick’s Day, we lost the April meeting, there was a drought during the summer meetings and we were watering the track up to three days before the October two-day festival meeting.”
6.5 million gallons poured onto the track from newly constructed wells on the track and this meant that racing was able to continue in safe ground conditions when other tracks across the country were unable to race.
Chairman Tim Nolan said the membership was now at its highest in the past decade and he outlined that the purpose of the club was to support the local track.
He complimented Mr Murphy and his team for the track improvements and for keeping the racing going during a difficult summer for the sport.
There was also an increase in sponsorship which augured well for the future of the track and he claimed that some new sponsors are coming on board in 2019.
Treasurer Keith Cooke presented a detailed set of accounts that showed the club in credit at the end of 2018.
There was a vote of supreme confidence from the membership when all outgoing officers were re-elected to serve for 2019; Chairman: Tim Nolan, Vice Chairman: Mary Doyle, Treasurer: Keith Cooke and Secretary, Mary Ballantyne.
