Enniscorthy Municipal District Council held a special meeting this morning to pay tribute to Morgan Dunne, (90), 6, St Moling’s Terrace, Enniscorthy, who was a member of Enniscorthy Urban District Council for serveral terms and served as Chairman in 1975 and 1976.
Mr Dunne died suddenly on Sunday, October 21st, as he left Enniscorthy Golf Club, where he had been a member of long standing, and Club President, held in the highest esteem and enjoyed the company of many friends.

MORGAN DUNNE
Council Chairman, Cllr Willie Kavanagh, opened the meeting and told the members that the Council wished to extend sympathy to the Dunne family on the death of Morgan.
None of the members present had served on the Council with Mr Dunne, but Cllrs Kathleen Codd-Nolan and Barbara-Anne Murphy worked with him on the VEC committes up to a few years ago.
“When Morgan spoke you always listened. He was a man of common sense. He felt it was very important that everybody had an equal access to a good education,” said Cllr Codd-Nolan, who added: “He was also a great character and had a great sense of humour. He was great company to be with.”
Cllr Murphy said Morgan was “a great visionary and always had an eye on the ball.”
Cllr Johnny Mythen said he was “a man of vision” and Clr Keith Doyle said he “championed the ordinary people of Enniscorthy, especially on the Shannon side of the town.”
Cllr John O’Rourke said “Enniscorthy has lost one of it’s great leaders, not just in education, but in culture and community spirit too. He had vision.”
Speaking on behalf of the Council officials, Director of Services, John Carley, said “he fought hard for his people” and was known for “taking no prisoners.”
Tadhg O’Corcora, Senior Executive Engineer, also paid tribute to Morgan Dunne.
Apologies were received from Cllrs Paddy Kavanagh and Oliver Walsh, and District Manager, Liz Hore, all of whom were unavoidably absent from the meeting that concluded with a minute’s silence.
A native of Courtnacuddy, Mr Dunne was married in 1949 to Mary (who died in 2014, aged 84 years) and they established a family home at the newly constructed St Moling’s Terrace, at the top of Shannon Hill facing the historic Vinegar Hill.
He was a member of the staff of St. Senan’s Hospital, but became involved in local poilitics, firstly as a member of Sinn Fein, briefly with The Labour Party and later as an Independent, and served many years as a member of Enniscorthy Urban District Council.
He was also chairman of the transport union.
Having attended Enniscorthy Vocational School, Mr Dunne found a place on the Wexford Vocational Education Committee, a position he held for 40 years, and he was also Chairman of Enniscorthy Vocational College Board of Management.
Beloved husband of the late Mary and loving father of PJ, Maurice, Jim, Mary, Hughie, Fergal, Kieran, Adrienne, Des and the late Eileen and Seán (Shirley). Sadly, missed by his loving family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Funeral Mass took place today at 11 am in St. Senan’s Parish Church, Enniscorthy, and burial afterwards in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Enniscorthy.
