HOCKEY; Enniscorthy ladies settle for a draw

ENNISCORTHY 1 KILKENNY 1

Enniscorthy Ladies 3rds team are top of the Sunday League following a 1-1 draw with Kilkenny on Sunday.
Enniscorthy took charge from the whistle. Muireann Ní Dhuinn and Tara Somers dominated possession in the early stages of the game, utilising the width of the pitch to make progress.
In attack, Bridget Kehoe was quick to action, creating a goal opportunity in the early stages of play.
Kilkenny responded well but were no match for Enniscorthy defender Jane Peppard, who repeatedly hampered Kilkenny’s attempts to break into the circle with well-timed, effective tackles.
Working with Muireann Nic Corcráin on her right, Peppard sent the ball back in the right direction.
Ní Dhuinn and Somers had a tough battle to return the ball to the attack, but their perseverance paid off. Frayne’s swift and slick stickwork sent the ball to Catherine Oakes. Receiving at the post, Oakes scored the opening goal of the game.
Kilkenny clawed their way back into the match with a series of shots on goal in the second half. Slaneyside goalkeeper Alice Medcalf – in her second game of the weekend – deflected a number of shots, but Kilkenny eventually broke through and scored.
Enniscorthy’s utility player Linda Durnan switched to a sweeper role to prevent further damage by the Kilkenny side, and this provided a platform for Enniscorthy to threaten once again.
As the game drew to a close, Ní Dhuin passed to Nic Corcráin, whose quick response found Frayne. Frayne executed a beautiful drag and shot on goal, which was disallowed, and the sides finished level.
Enniscorthy Ladies’ 3rds take on Carlow’s 1st XI – last year’s league winners – in their next game.
Squad: Alice Medcalf, Muireann Nic Corcráin, Catherine Oakes, Nicola Jacob, Jane Peppard, Brigid Kehoe, Mairead Murphy, Tara Somers, Hayley Squire, Lisa Frayne, Melanie Ní Dhuinn, Irene Doyle, Mairéad Neville, Linda Durnan. Coach: Roy Chapman
