Enniscorthy Ladies First XI continued their success in Division 7 on Saturday, winning their third match of the season with a 3-1 victory over Corinthians at St. Columba’s College, Dublin.
For the opening twenty minutes Enniscorthy attacked but Corinthians proved very strong in the back line. Gainst the run of play the home side scored the opening goal, Corinthians quickly turned over the ball, then goaled from a penalty corner.
Enniscorthy attacked up the wings with some intricate linking play between Rynhart, Wickham, Sweeney and Larkin. As a result, it wasn’t long before Enniscorthy got an equaliser; Rynhart earned a penalty corner and in a well worked move, Ciara Kelly got the crucial finishing touch.
Corinthians reacted quick to the equaliser but were stopped with some tremendous tackles by the captain Julie Watchorn and vice captain Laura Smith . Aine O’Brien on the right wing proved very strong with great play up the line and Leah Chapman with excellent reverse stick tackles up the left wing. Enniscorthy goalkeeper Norah McGinty made a number of good saves to deny the home side.
Further up the pitch, Wickham, made a great entry into the Corinthians circle and was very unlucky not to get the ball past the Corinthians ‘keeper, while Sweeney and Larkin worked very well in the circle and earned the Wexford side a number of penalty corners. Enniscorthy kept the pressure on, and it was a Rynhart pass to Niamh Ogilvie which gave the visitors the lead, Ogilvie getting on the scoresheet for the third week in a row.
Corinthians never gave up but Enniscorthy had the final word in the last play of the game. A pass from the left reached Laura Smith who made the deflection, squeezing the ball past the Corinthians goalkeeper, leaving the final score 3-1 to Enniscorthy.
