Enniscorthy Hockey Club men’s second XI recorded a 5-3 win in their derby game with Wicklow at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday in the Leinster Division 6.
Wicklow scored an early goal before William Durnan steadied the Enniscorthy ship with a goal of his own from a penalty corner after sustained period of pressure in which Hogan and Walshe saw efforts go wide for the hosts. It was swings and roundabouts as Wicklow then earned two penalty corners of their own but Enniscorthy’s defence held firm, Hogan then got the lead for the Slaneysiders just after the half hour mark, while Leo Durnan could have extended the lead after a good interception from Hogan, but his effort went wide.
Wicklow then drew level after the break following a penalty flick, but this was swiftly followed up with a two-goal salvo inside two minutes from Cian Hogan and Roy Chapman. The goal drama wasn’t quite finished though, as Wicklow pulled it back to 4-3 with twenty minutes remaining.
Ivan Rothwell then extended Enniscorthy’s lead following an excellent drive into the Wicklow circle despite the hosts temporarily going a man down thanks to a yellow card, and it was a lead the did not relinquish.
