The successful Wexford point-to-point trail continued at Loughrea, Co. Galway, today, with the four year old maiden race divided and both divisions produced a Wexford first and second.
New handler, Mary Doyle, Coolgarrow, Enniscorthy, saddled her first first winner from three runners this season when Unexpected Depth, owned by the Baltimore Syndicate, took the first division of the maiden race for four year olds by two lengths.
A first winner for 19 years old Barry Stone, Unexpected Depth, held off the Colin Bowe trained Pistol Whipped with Barry O’Neill up.
There was compensation for Bowe and O’Neill in the second division when Monsieur D’Arque had five lengths to spare over Tomgarrow, trained by Sean Doyle, and ridden by Harley Dunne.
Harley Dunne was in the winners’ enclosure later in the day when he won the mares maiden race for five year olds and upwards by three-quarters of a length on Time Is Honey, trained by Blackwater handler, Shane Byrne, for his partner, Emma Fry.
It was a good weekend for Dunne, who amongst his placed efforts, had a Saturday winner aboard Peter’s Portrait for Philip Rothwell at Moira, Co. Down.
Point-to-point action comes to the south-east next Sunday when the Shillelagh & District Hunt races at Fairwood, Tinahely.
The card includes a four year old maiden, maiden contests for five year old geldings, five years and over mares, six years and over geldings, a Mares Winner of One Race and an Open Lightweight Race confined to lady riders. The first race is off at 2 pm.
