Digital Information Evening at Gorey Library

GOREY LIBRARY

Digital Learning Club is a new initiative in Gorey to tackle the “digital divide” and on Tuesday, October 9th at 7 pm, Mayte McGuinness of MediaSkool will host an Information Evening in Gorey Library, where members of the public can find out more about the new Digital Learning Club.
According to the 2018 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), half of Irish adults lack at least basic digital skills. There is now a “digital divide” where many people feel like they are being left out with the pace of change in technology and the widespread adoption of digital devices.
The aim of the Club is to encourage members of the public to learn and share digital knowledge, enhance their digital skills, and practice using digital devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops and personal computers in a friendly environment.
“There is a demographic that would like to improve their digital literacy skills but do not want a digital course or training that is heavily structured,” says Mayte. “They want to ask questions and get the answers quickly in a more informal environment. The problem is they often turn to family members who lack the time or patience to take the role of digital coach.”
“If you grew up without the Internet and mobile phones at your fingertips, with our free Club you can learn and practice using new technologies informally, at your own pace in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
“You can learn what is relevant to you, building knowledge in small blocks, from everything from texting to blogging, to learning about security issues, how to keep you and your family safe online, and even how to do basic computer programming if that is of interest to you.”
Mayte McGuinness is the founder and director of MediaSkool and she has been facilitating one to one digital skills training in Gorey and the wider community since 2014.
She has over ten years’ experience in teaching digital skills to individuals and groups. Mayte is an advocate for helping people to embrace digital technologies and use them to enhance their life, connect with family and friends, and stay safe online.
The purpose of the information evening in Gorey Library for the Digital Learning Club is to invite people to participate in this new local initiative.
If you think you could benefit from attending a new Digital Learning Club in Gorey or if you are interested in helping others to make more sense of the digital world we are living in, please come along to the Information Evening in the Foyer of Gorey Library.
