The current race for the Golden Hurl, the top scorer from play in the Wexford SHC, see’s Podge Doran lead the way. The Oylegate-Glenbrien full forward has 6-10 to his name after the 5 group games and will look to add to that total when facing the Shelmaliers this weekend. Doran has 10 goals in his last 8 club games and will give the Shels defence plenty of trouble.
The table above must give Davy Fitzgerald great heart as the club championship scoring has been filled with young talent. Ross Banville, Conor Hearne, Sean Keane Carroll (all Shelmaliers), Conal Clancy (Faythe Harriers), Seamus Casey (Oylegate), Ryan Mahon (Rapparees) and Rory Higgins (Rathnure) are all impressive young hurlers who have yet to make Davy’s senior hurling team. This is the clear feeling in the club championship, the young hurlers are stepping forward and playing without fear.

Last year saw Rory O Connor score a single point in the county final to beat Conor McDonald to the Golden Hurl by that solitary point. This year Rory has missed 4 games and has not had a fair shot at retaining his title, although one would expect him to pick up a few more over the coming seasons. Rory’s brother Jack has stepped forward for St Martins with an impressive 3-11 to date from play.
The one consistent in the scoring from play charts has been the superb Nicky Kirwan. The 2016 Golden Hurl winner has amassed 6-7 this season but will have no more games to try and regain his title. From 2016 to present no hurler has scored more points from play than Nicky Kirwan, an astonishing 16-27 in 20 games. His teammate Des Mythen has scored 59 times (1-58) in that same period, no hurler has scored more times from play than Mythen.
The relegation playoff this week sees Glynn Barntown face Buffers Alley. Glynn Barntown would be doing well to double mark Andrew Kenny who has scored 5-10 form play – over 40% of his teams total from play – the highest contribution of any single player a team this season so far. Can Kenny save the Alley men with one last haul of scores?
