Hockey- Enniscorthy off to a flying start

Cian Hogan opened the scoring for Enniscorthy

Enniscorthy’s second XI began their campaign with a 4-1 win against Three Rock Rovers at Grange Road. An early opener – inside the first five minutes – for Cian Hogan augured well in what was an even first half. Enniscorthy’s pace up front was causing problems for Rovers but the final pass was lacking somewhat, while the Dublin side equalised after fifteen minutes, as well as putting pressure on the Wexford team’s defence with a penalty corner.

Eamon Sweeney restored Enniscorthy’s lead early in the second half

Following the interval a crucial five minute spell earned the Slaneysiders all three points. Eamonn Sweeney regained the lead three minutes after the restart, forcing the ball over the line despite the best efforts of the Rovers ‘keeper; Ben Doyle then made it 3-1 after Enniscorthy soaked up Rovers pressure and rapidly counter-attacked.

Enniscorthy continued to apply pressure, earning a brace of penalty corners in quick succession before Jake English managed to squeeze a fourth over the line and ensured last year’s Division 7 runners-up got off to a winning start in Division 6.

Squad: Glenn Rothwell, Ben Doyle, Graeme Chapman, Nigel Bailey, Robbie Walshe, Billy James, Jack Doran, Eamonn Sweeney, Alan Smith, Cian Hogan, Jake English, Fraser Rothwell, Mick Jordan, Mark Ennett.
