Coolgreany united to fight post office closure

Cllr Malcolm Byrne addressing the packed house at Coolgreany National School to express concerns about the pending post office closure.

Concerns about the future of Coolgreany as a community if the local post office is closed was publicly aired tonight as over 150 households were represented at a meeting held in Coolgreany National School and vented their anger at Coolgreany Post Office being one of 11 post offices across Co. Wexford facing closure.
Closing the facility would force members of the community having to conduct their business through post offices at Ballyfad, Kilanerin, Arklow, Gorey or Avoca.
Cllrs Malcolm Byrne, Joe Sullivan, Robbie Ireton and Fionntan Ó Suilleabháin were amongst the attendance.
Many people spoke with a strong desire to fight to maintain the postal service. “Coolgreany and its surrounding area will not give up without a fight.”

The community also thanked Norah Finn and Jim Short “who have provided fantastic service to our community over many many years.”
More information of a plan of action will be posted over the following few days.
There was strong support at the meeting to use An Posts Appeals process to make the strong case.
“An Post say the population of 376 falls below the 500 population threshold whereas the catchment area from Croghan to the sea takes in over 2,000,” according to Cllr Ó Súilleabháin.
Locals were encouraged to write to: An Post Appeals, GPO, Dublin, to make the case for the retention of Coolgreany Post Office.
Posting on social media, Sharon O’Connor said; “The heart will be gone out of the community if the closure goes ahead.”
