The Friends of Enniscorthy Drama Group have secured the Wexford Premier of Black 47 the first major feature film to tackle one of the most controversial and harrowing periods of Irish history.
Set in Ireland during the Great Famine this is not only the most exciting film of 2018 but destined to be a local screen favourite alongside Saving Private Ryan, John Banville’s The Sea, and Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn and The Wind That Shook the Barley.
The film is set in 1847, the worst year of the Famine. Feeney (James Frecheville), a young Irishman, returns home after serving abroad with the British Army. When he discovers what has happened to his family while he’s been away, Feeney plots a revolution in revenge. British soldier Hannah (Hugo Weaving) is sent to find Feeney and put an end to his uprising.
It also stars Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea and Sarah Greene.
The Black 47 production team focused its shoot on counties Kildare and Wicklow in the east, and in Galway in the west. Harristown House near Brannockstown, Co. Kildare, was the location for our Irish Constabulary Barracks,
Wine and cheese reception at 8 pm followed by the screening of the film on Tuesday, September 4th in Movies@Gorey.
Tickets for the premiere are €20 and selling fast, but some are still available from the committee of the Friends of Enniscorthy Drama Group or from Movies@Gorey (053 9489570) or www.moviesatgorey.ie
