Firefighters battling a fire on Vinegar Hill this evening.

The alarm was raised about 5.30 pm when locals noticed smoke rising from the overgrowth below the rocks that lead to famed Vinegar Hill.

The area comprises of commons with public pathways and backs onto Vinegar Hill Villas, Shannon Hill, Fr Cullen’s Terrace, Coláiste Bride Secondary School, the town reservoir and Fr Murphy Park. There are also a number of private dwellings in the vicinity.
A slight southerly wind prevailed and the firefighters contained the blaze to a small area and prevented it from spreading.
Large numbers of local people congregated on the visitor centre on Vinegar Hill to see the large plumes of smoke while others were keeping a close watch on their property.
The long hot summer may have been a contributory factor to the start of the blaze, but thankfully, there was no injury to life, limb or property, but the landmark hill of 1798 fame may look a bit off colour for a few months.
