With effect from today, Tuesday, July 17th, An Post takes over responsibility for the issuing and renewal of dog licences from local authorities and commences the process of developing a new National Dog Licence database.
This new Database will spell the end for the old “manual” dog licence, modernising the dog licensing system to provide more timely information and helping to boost dog licence income.
The Annual Dog Licences fee remains at €20 while a Life-time Dog Licence costs €140.
Owners of multiple numbers of dogs can continue to purchase a General Dog Licence from Wexford County Council at a cost of €400.
Local authorities retain their responsibilities for control of dogs and enforcement of dog licencing under the Control of Dogs Act.

Wexford County Council reminds all dog owners that they must;
Keep their dog under control when in public (best on a lead);
Have a current Licence for their dog.
Microchip and register their dog.
Muzzle certain breeds and keep them on a strong chain when in public. (e.g. Alsatian, German Shepherd, Akita, Bull Terriers, Doberman, Rottweiler etc.)
Clean up after their dog if it fouls in a public place.
Wexford County Council’s Wardens will be carrying out additional licence check patrols over the coming weeks and months.
The maximum fine for failure to licence your dog is €2,500.
