Council honours Enniscorthy rugby heroes

Sporting prowess and champion rugby was celebrated in Enniscorthy Castle on Friday evening when Enniscorthy Municipal District Council laid on a civic reception for the victorious Enniscorthy team that won the ‘Towns Cup’ and many tributes were paid.
Enniscorthy Rugby Football Club won the 2018 93rd Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup on Sunday, April 29th, at Wicklow, beating Tullow by 20 points to 13.
Council Chairman, Cllr Keith Doyle, lead the tributes. “I am delighted to host this evenings reception to celebrate the wonderful achievement of our sporting heroes – Enniscorthy Rugby Football Club – who won the 2018 Provincial Towns’ Cup. A civic reception is the highest honour that the chairman and elected members can bestow on an individual group on behalf of the people of Enniscorthy town and district.”
In reply, Andrew Owen, President of Enniscorthy Rugby Football Club said; “It is a tremendous honour to represent Enniscorthy Rugby Club at a civic reception,” and he added that he “sincerely thank the chairman and members of the municipal district for recognising our achievement and their efforts are very much appreciated.”
Referring to the council and the people of Enniscorthy, Mr Owen acknowledged; “It is great to have your support.”
Club Captain, Ivan Poole, presented an informal address in which he stated; “Tonight is a recognition of what we did this season – winning the cup – and the final was the end of the season and the hard work that the team put in.” He paid tributes to the officials and coaches for their support and guidance along the path of success.
“My team mates were all local and grew up in Enniscorthy,” said the captain who started his career at the club as an eight year old.
Director of Services, John Carley, who is a Wexford man associated with rugby in Carlow, but he also expressed his loyalty and support for Enniscorthy, and he was passionate in his words of praise.
“Enniscorthy are a proud club. They are here since 1912. The good days are always worth it. You always remember the good days right up until the end. If you win a medal, that medal can never be taken away from you, you will always have a Towns’ Cup medal. You won it through hard work, team work, but you also won it for all those other people who help the club and that is what sport is all about.”
Some officials from the Leinster branch were also present and their attendance acknowledged. District Manager, Liz Hore, acted as master of ceremonies and framed presentations were presented as were scrolls to all members of the victorious team.
For the record the team was as follows; Angelo Todisco, David Murphy, Paddy Waters, Tony White, Tom Farrar, Tomas Stamp, Joe Bulmer, Tom Ryan, Timmy Morrissey, John Daly, Nick Doyle, Jim White, Brian Bolger, Arthur Dunne, David Shore, Killian Lett, Ivan Poole (capt.), Daniel Pim, Ivan Jacob, David O’Dwyer, Richard Dunne.

Enniscorthy have won the competition three times in the last seven years, and they have won the prestigious ‘Towns Cup’ on eight occasions.
For the record the historic years were 1926, 1927, 1934, (played at Landsdowne Road, now the Aviva Stadium), 1963, 1989, 2012 (centenary year of the club), 2015 and 2018.
It was the first Towns’ Cup Final shown ‘live’ on television.
