Uachtarán na h-Éireann, Michael D. Higgins, accompanied by his wife, Sabina, was in Wexford town on Sunday at the Centenary Commemoration of the death of John E. Redmond, where he laid a wreath at the Redmond Mausoleum at St John’s Graveyard.
President Higgins said it was a pleasure to attend the ceremonies and he was particulary honoured to meet Redmond’s two grand-daughters and a great-grand-daughter, Dr Mary Greene, who spoke at the crypt, all of whom had travelled from the UK.
The President and guests were welcomed by Cllr John Hegarty, Chairman of Wexford County Council. The Mayor of Wexford, Cllr Jim Moore, Dail Éireann members Paul Kehoe and Brendan Howlin, and Council CEO, Tom Enright, were also present.
Cllr Hegarty gave an outline of John Redmond’s life and described him as “a great Wexford man and one of the most prominent Irish politicians ever.”
There were a number of other contributors to the event in the library, including the chief organiser and Redmond expert, Jarlath Glynn from Enniscorthy Library branch; biographer Dermot Meleady, Ronan McGreevy of The Irish Times, and Dr Martin O’Donoghue.
A parade was led by a colour party from the 3rd Battalion of the Irish Defence Forces, the ONE Commodore John Barry Wexford branch, and the New Ross FCA Pipe Band, who played the Last Post, the raising of the national flag and Reveille.
A blessing was given by Fr Aodhán Marken and Canon Arthur Minion and Amhrán na bFiann was played by St Patrick’s Fife and Drum Band.
An exhibition explaining the life and times of John E. Redmond is on display at Wexford Library until the end of April.
