Naomh Éanna have certainly been filling their scoring boots during the opening rounds of the Joyces Expert county intermediate ‘A’ football championship.
GROUP A
After having 19 points to spare against Kilrush in round-one, last year’s beaten finalists Naomh Éanna were in similarly ruthless mood in Saturday’s 3-24 to 2-4 win over Geraldine O’Hanrahans at the ‘Centre of Excellence’ Ferns.
Lee Kinsella, Charlie McGuckin and Wexford hurling ace Conor McDonald all found the net for the Gorey men who were always in control.
Also at the ‘Centre of Excellence’ on Saturday, Kilmore joined Naomh Éanna in making it back-to-back wins in this section when the Kevin Keating-managed seasiders posted a tidy 2-15 to 0-8 victory over Réalt na Mara.
Kilmore were moving in the right direction at half-time (1-7 to 0-3) and they continued to set the pace, with Noel Casey grabbing both goals and Daithí Moore the bulk of their points.
At Camolin on Sunday, Kilrush profited from a 1-5 to 0-4 half-time lead as they went on to hold off a stern fight-back from Cloughbawn by 2-8 to 1-7 courtesy of goals from Ted Kinsella and Seán Bookey.
Harry Kehoe finished the second-half Cloughbawn goal which gave them a fighting chance.
GROUP B
Clongeen are 100% in their drive to get straight back into the top intermediate grade after Noel Stafford’s men got the better of the promoted St. Martin’s ‘seconds’ by 2-14 to 1-9 at Grantstown on Saturday.
Wexford senior footballer Paul Curtis was in fine form for Clongeen who also had two goal-scorer Shane Cahill to thank.
Cahill’s first finish helped open-up a 1-8 to 1-3 lead at half-time for Clongeen, with Pádraig Rossiter responding with a goal for St. Martin’s.
Diarmuid Byrne and Seán Stafford had the Martin’s back within 1-8 to 1-5 shortly after the resumption. But Clongeen stretched clear by 2-12 to 1-5 and proceeded to safely negotiate their second successive victory.
In Gorey on Saturday evening, the Kilanerin second-string were leading 0-8 to 0-7 entering the closing ten minutes before St. Patrick’s eventually made their dominance tell in a 2-12 to 0-8 success.
Kilanerin had lost out to Clongeen in round-one while St. Pat’s match was postponed.
The Colin Sunderland-managed Pat’s put Kilanerin to the sword with late goals from Shane Finn and Richard Flood as John Doyle and Niall O’Brien dominated the point scoring for the purple-and-gold.
