Crossbar helps Volunteers edge Craanford

The crossbar came to the rescue of Volunteers as they edged Craanford in Friday’s Joyces Expert county intermediate ‘A’ football championship Group B encounter at St. Patrick’s Park.

Danny O’Sullivan came up with a key late score as the Vols got past Craanford by 0-7 to 0-9 – but only after a last-gasp Craanford equalising effort came back off the country-end crossbar seconds before Volunteers greeted the final-whistle with both joy and relief.

Volunteers’ scheduled opening-round tie fell victim to the impact of the bad weather the previous weekend.

But the Wexford town men weathered a determined Craanford push to shade matters on Friday.

Craanford were seeking to build upon their opening weekend 2-6 to 1-7 success over the promoted St. Martin’s ‘seconds’.

Today (Saturday) sees the other couple of games in Group B being decided when Clongeen take on St. Martin’s at Grantstown (2p.m.), and St. Patrick’s face Kilanerin’s second-string in an all-Gorey district derby at Pairc Uí Síocháin at 5p.m.
