Round two surprises on the cards?

Round one certainly went the way of the favourites, but some upsets could be on the cards in this weekend’s round-two action in the Tom Doyle Supplies county senior football championship.

Castletown are priced at 4/9 against arch-rivals Kilanerin, who could represent a major accumulator-booster at 2/1, as could St. James’, who are also available at 2/1 in their all-New Ross district affair with Gusserane, who are trading at 4/9. And Glynn-Barntown simply cannot be ruled out at a generous 6/4 against defending champions Starlights, who can be backed at 8/13.

The second-round gets underway on Friday with a double-header at Hollymount, before Innovate Wexford Park hosts another double-serving on Saturday afternoon in advance of games that same evening at New Ross and Gorey rounding-off activity in this championship until probably July.

Defending champions Starlights and last year’s beaten finalists St. Martin’s along with Castletown, promoted Kilanerin, Shelmaliers and Glynn-Barntown are all entering the weekend unburdened having all registered opening victories.

However, there is definitely an extra urgency about St. Anne’s, Sarsfields, Fethard, St. James’, Gusserane and Taghmon-Camross to try to grab some crucial points before heading into the long break for inter-county activity.

And on Aintree Grand National weekend, here are the runners and riders in round-two of the Wexford SFC –

GROUP A

ST. MARTIN’S v SARSFIELDS: Since the saints’ return from intermediate ranks in 2011, the Martin’s have prevailed over Sarsfields in their two meetings, most recently in the group-stages in 2016 by 4-21 to 2-10. The Piercestown-Murrintown men remain quite a senior force these days whereas Sarsfields are in a redevelopment phase, and while the Sars offer some promise, Daithí Waters and company are tipped to again prevail.

ST. ANNE’S v FETHARD: The Anne’s weren’t far off denying Castletown last Saturday, and they will be hoping that Seán Kelly comes through unscathed with Wexford FC away to Galway United on Friday after his tidy contribution from the ‘bench for the Anne’s last weekend. Fethard, meanwhile, will clearly be wanting better scoring support for John Tubritt, who was their sole scorer in defeat to St. Martin’s last Sunday. But the Anne’s defence will pose them serious difficulties and as a consequence the Rathangan men are fancied to get off the mark.

CASTLETOWN v KILANERIN: A 2-13 to 0-12 loss to Castletown in August 2014 contributed ultimately towards Kilanerin’s relegation at the end of that campaign. Yet that was only a year after Kilanerin had dominated this derby 3-13 to 2-3. The red-and-white are coming strong again, and while Castletown caught the eye in victory over St. Anne’s, they looked vulnerable. This could be cagey, but Castletown look slightly better resourced.

GROUP B

STARLIGHTS v GLYNN-BARNTOWN: Despite their respective first-round wins, title-holders Starlights and 2016 finalists Glynn-Barntown impressed and generated concerns in equal measure. But at their best, these two are formidable and could contribute to a real humdinger on Friday at Hollymount. Indeed, their meeting last year at this very same stage of the championship didn’t lack for scores when Starlights pulled through by 2-14 to 4-5. The verdict goes to the Enniscorthy town men again.

SHELMALIERS v TAGHMON-CAMROSS: Shelmaliers are no doubt anxious to establish a more ruthless edge having squandered a host of scoring chances in victory over St. James’ last weekend. They will certainly be stretched by a vibrant Taghmon-Camross. But there is much more to recommend about the Shels, who are expected to triumph in the sides’ first championship clash since 2011, when Shelmaliers won 2-14 to 1-11 in the group stages.

ST. JAMES’ v GUSSERANE: The ‘Jimmies’, under new boss Fran Fitzhenry, showed real potential in defeat to Shelmaliers last Saturday when they sorely felt the absence of Matthew O’Hanlon and Kevin O’Grady in the finishing department. O’Grady remains in New York and Gusserane will seek to exploit that and atone for recent championship setbacks against the Ramsgrange men, including last year by a narrow 1-13 to 3-6. St. James’ could well be a tidy 2/1 investment. But Gusserane are tipped to squeak this all-New Ross district affair.
