HOCKEY- Enniscorthy Claim South East Plate

There was drama aplenty as Enniscorthy’s ladies third eleven claimed the South East Plate on Friday night at the Astro Active Centre.

It was a keenly- contested encounter throughout between Enniscorthy and their Wexford counterparts, requiring silver goal extra time and the penalty flicks to separate the sides. Lisa Frayne and Cora Rafferty exchanged a goal apiece for the two sides in the first half.

This was followed by an extremely close encounter in front of a sizeable crowd; the drama only added to by temporary floodlight failure. Frayne proved a handful for Wexford throughout, forcing a number of saves from the Wexford goalkeeper. At the other end McGinty had to be on her toes, while Nic Corcrain had to be at her best in making a goal-saving tackle.

Penalty flicks followed. Enniscorthy raced into a 3-0 lead on flicks thanks to goals from Freyne, Ivanna Yates, Melanie Ni Dhuinn; Norah McGinty in the Enniscorthy goal proved the hero of the hour with three saves of her own, and Enniscorthy’s name was on the trophy for only the fifth time. Leinster Hockey Association President Crozier Deane was on hand to present Enniscorthy captain Irene Doyle with the trophy
