Newly-wed aids Martin’s to some bliss

Ciarán Lyng returned from his recent wedding celebrations to help St. Martin’s to some first-round bliss at the expense of Fethard in Sunday’s Tom Doyle Supplies county senior football championship Group A clash at Cushinstown.

The Martin’s, last year’s beaten finalists, never really looked back after Paidi Kelly had sent Jack Devereux through to find the net during the early stages.

Fethard claimed first-blood with a point before Devereux netted to spark a surge by the saints which saw them lead 1-3 to 0-2 thanks to points from Jamie Carty, Darren Codd and Ryan Murphy.

Fethard had it back to 1-3 to 0-3 on 22 minutes before Jake Firman extended the gap to 1-4 to 0-3 at half-time.

The Martin’s stretched clear by 1-8 to 0-3 as Lyng made the scoresheet along and Jack Devereux and Jake Firman (2), while Adam Cantwell went close with a goaling opportunity.

Fethard pegged back a few points, but Kyle Firman and Jack Devereux kept the Martin’s clear before Fethard’s disappointment was added to by a late sending-off.

Fethard are focussed on trying to bounce back against St. Anne’s next weekend, when St. Martin’s are due to face Sarsfields.
