There were lots of fireworks at Innovate Wexford Park in the Tom Doyle Supplies county senior football championship Group A first-round double-header on Saturday.
In the curtain-raiser, former Ireland and Leinster rugby star Shane Byrne was celebrating after a couple of early second-half goals and two sensational late saves saw Castletown get the better of St. Anne’s by 2-11 to 0-15.
The sides were tied on 0-7 apiece at half-time before Ben Brosnan and Donnacha Holmes pounced early in the second-half with the decisive net-rattlers for the north county men.
The Anne’s refused to give in and might have snatched it but for vital interventions in the closing stages by Castletown’s Anthony Masterson and Danny Gardiner to prevent goals to leave rugby star Byrne and fellow management colleagues Paul Bealin, Joe O’Sullivan and Jack Kavanagh happy.
In the second tie at the Clonard venue, reigning intermediate champions Kilanerin scored a winning return to senior ranks after a three-year absence.
They ultimately got the better of Sarsfields by 2-14 to 1-6 with second-half goals from Conor Devitt and Dean O’Toole after the Sars had led at half-time by 0-5 to 0-3.
