Semblance of a General Election looming when the newly elected Leader of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, T.D., paid a visit to Wexford town on Thursday and addressed local issues at a rally in the Talbot Hotel where she told the gathering: “Wexford deserves far better and needs a Sinn Féin TD.”
Deputy McDonald said; “Wexford is brimming with talent, brimming with ambition, brimming with potential. “Unfortunately the county has been badly let down by bad regional development policies from this government and previous administrations.”
She said that it was “appalling” that the IDA has not held a proper visit to the county in a decade!
Deputy McDonald was critical of the lack of a business support infrastructure and indicated that the quality of broadband was a matter of grave concern.
“It is also shocking that Rosslare Port is not included in the Ireland 2040 plan. It requires significant investment to become an economic driver could and should be for the South East,” said the Sinn Fein Leader, who added; “Rosslare is not just a local asset. It is a national asset, especially in the context of Brexit. The proper development of the N11 is also critical to this. The government needs to wake-up and look, not only at Rosslare’s potential, but also at is strategic importance to regional and economic development.”
Speaking about her engagements with the groups she meet in Wexford, Deputy McDonald said; “It is clear that the community and voluntary sector in Wexford does amazing work despite a chronic lack of government support.
“I was particularly taken with the work and experiences of The Collective Sensory Group on St John’s Road. This is a parent driven group providing Occupational Therapy services for children who otherwise would be left on HSE waiting lists for years and would not receive the clinical inventions that are essential to improving outcomes,” she concluded.
Deputy McDonald and Wexford Sinn Féin General Election candidate Cllr Johnny Mythen met with a number of groups including Wexford Chamber of Commerce, Family Carers Ireland, The Collective Sensory Group and childcare workers.
Cllr Mythen and a number of party supporters also attended a rally in Dublin on Saturday where the plight of the homeless was echoed by an estimated 10,000 who took to the streets of the capital.
