Installation of floodlighting is among the key objectives outlined by Wexford GAA in extensive plans for a proposed upgrading of Wexford Park.
Addressing obvious problems with the playing-surface also number among the areas which the County Board are focussed on correcting.
Details of the plans for the main-county grounds were outlined at the monthly meeting of the County Board.
County Development Officer, Cathal Byrne (Ballyhogue) was asked last year to draft a development plan with a view towards having the board in a strong position to apply for any future infrastructure grants to help enhance major centres such as Wexford Park and others under Wexford GAA’s umbrella.
The bulletin from the latest session of the County Board states that the development report is ‘now ready’.
The provision of floodlighting at Innovate Wexford Park would expand the options for hosting major adult and underage games at the venue, including holding either hurling or football National League games there on a Saturday evening so as to afford supporters the option of getting behind both Wexford teams on the same weekend instead of having to choose between the two, as is currently the situation more often than not.
Improved pitch irrigation is also among the key areas in the development plans for Wexford Park, which also include an upgrade of the Press-Box, the development of a Wexford Park Museum and Cafeteria, and the upgrade of the much criticised PA System.
The report of the Development Officer also identifies a number of potential works at the Wexford GAA Centre of Excellence in Ferns, including the addition of floodlighting to Pitch 3 (training pitch); the fit-out of the first-floor of the dressing-room complex; and, the surfacing of the car-park.
It is estimated that the works will cost about €1.5million in total.
