First treble for Inch jockey Luke Murphy

LUKE MURPHY rode three winners at Waterford point-to-point today.

Luke Murphy from Inch, near Coolgreany, was the star point-to-point rider with a treble on the card at Curraghmore, Co. Waterford today (Sunday).
He opened his account on Rock On Carlos, trained at Ballydarragh, Craanford, by Liam Kenny for the Orphan Girl Syndicate, who got home by a length in the maiden race for five year old geldings.

Murphy made it two in the mare’s maiden race aboard Ballybough Nora, trained at Dungourney, Co. Cork, by James Sheehan, with three lengths to spare, and notched up a treble on Ballinasilla, trained by Bernadette Murphy at Blackwater, by two and a half lengths in the geldings’ maiden race confined to novice riders.
Based with Denis Murphy, Luke Murphy has bettered last year’s total of five winners and now has eleven career point-to-point successes to his name.
On the same card, Shane O’Rourke, Foulksmills, teamed up with father and son, owner and trainer combination, James and Vincent Devereux, Tacumshane, to earn a one and a half lengths victory on Ard Chros in the Winner of One contest.
There was also action at Castletown-Geoghegan where Rob James rode a double ahead of his participation in tomorrow’s Boylesports Irish Grand National on top weight, Outlander, trained by Gordon Elliott for Gigginstown House Stud.
James rode the winner of the maiden race for four year olds on the Donnchadh Doyle trained Gaelik Coast by four lengths from the neighbouring stable of Colin Bowe and Highway Companion ridden by Barry O’Neill.
The Killane rider earned the 23rd success of the season on the Martin Brassil trained Maple Flyer in the mare’s maiden. This was James’ third winner in two days. He won on Tara West for Donnchadh Doyle at Loughanmore in Antrim on Saturday.
At the finish of the Open Lightweight Race, Barry O’Neill on Uxizandre in the McManus colours and trained by Padraig Roche in Kildare, got the better of Rob James on Sammantom, by a head.
Also at the Westmeath track, Denis Murphy, Ballyboy Stables, The Ballagh, saddled Arctic Road to win the maiden race for five year old geldings with Simon Cavanagh taking the mount. It was close with only a head verdict.
James Kenny, Craanford, son of Liam Kenny, who saddled Rock On Carlos to victory at Curraghmore, was in action at Castletown-Geoghegan and won the maiden race confined to novice riders on Steelambition trained by Claire Howes to record his fourth victory in the saddle.

Action returned to Loughanmore in Antrim on Easter Monday and while there was no Wexford trained winners, three Wexford jockeys were amongst the winners – Jamie Codd had a double, Barry O’Neill enjoyed a winner and Jimmy O’Rourke, Silversprings, Bridgetown, was also in the winners’ enclosure. The weekend round of meetings resulted in O’Neill and Codd sharing the top spot in the national point-to-point riders’ championship with 34 winners apiece for the season.
Local action next Sunday at Courtown where the annual Island Hunt point-to-point takes place. First race at 2 pm.
