International cycle race in Gorey this weekend

The annual Easter Gorey 3-Day Cycle Race arrives in Gorey today (Saturday) and all eyes will be on the local challenger, Paul Byrne, proudly representing Gorey Cycling Club and sponsored by Redmond Electric Euronics in the international event.

A very strong rider Paul should do well. Gorey Cycling Club as also hosting the Scottish Spokes Racing Team as part of international connections, and they fielding a top team this year even though some of their riders are representing Britain at the Tour of Flanders this weekend.

The main bunch take the turn off the Enniscorthy road and onto the Carnew road on their way to the finish of the first stage from Blessington to Craanford on Saturday.

STAGE 1, 103kms SATURDAY
Sets out from Blessington at 12 noon, passes through Hackettstown, into Carnew and turning for Gorey; Turn at Craanford and into Carnew on a circuit through Gorey and finishing in Craanford village at approximately 2.25 pm.

STAGE 2, 6.4km Time Trial SUNDAY
Start at 9 am before Clough.

STAGE 3, 96.4kms SUNDAY
Sign on at Loch Garman Hotel, Gorey, for four laps a 24.1kms circuit at 12.30 – 1.30 pm. Start at 2 pm outside Tomkins’s Garage by the Monument at the top of the town. Points awarded on the 2nd, 3rd,and 4th Laps. The finish is just before the 50kph sign on the Enniscorthy Road.

STAGE 4, 4.85km, EASTER MONDAY
Sign on at Loch Garman Hotel at 11 am. Assemble in the side street opposite hotel and proceed up the Main Street through the town then go left at the Monument to the Statoil Garage from where the race starts at 12 noon.
Should pass through Carnew (12.20 pm), Shillelagh (12.35 pm), Tullow, Rathvilly (1.10 pm) and finish just before the Texaco Garage Blessington at 2 pm.
